Present Simple
with Be
The verb 'be' is different from the other verbs in this tense. Let's look at 'be' first:
Verb "Be" has : am , is , are
- I am.
- He/She/It is.
- We/You/They are.
- We use he for a man, she for a woman, and it for a thing.
- He is a little boy.
- She is beautiful.
- I like this dog. It is very big.
- We use they for people and for things.
- They are my friends.
- They are very beautiful.
The present simple of be – FORM

Contractions or short forms
- We use ‘m, ‘s and ‘re with personal pronouns (I, you, we ,they, he ,she ,it )
- I’m sad.
- You’re tired.
- we're pilots
- They're my sister
- He'sa firefighter
- She’s from Scotland.
- It's a cow.
Negative Sentences
- We use 'not' next to the verb 'be'
- I am not a student.
- You are not a nurse.
- We are not good boys.
- They are not monkeys.
- He is not a policeman.
- She is not a teacher.
- It is not a crocodile.
Example:
Negative short form
- I'm not a student.
- You aren't a nurse.
- We aren't good boys.
- They aren't monkeys.
- He isn't a policeman.
- She isn't a teacher.
- It isn't a crocodile.
Question And Answers
- we use the verb 'be' before Subject
- Am I a teacher? Yes, you are.
- Are you a vet? No, I'm not.
- Is he a lawyer? Yes, he is.
- Is she a sister? No, she isn't.
Example:

- Yes, they’re.
We can only use contractions in negative short answers. Not in positive short answers.
